Al-Hijr

Alif, Lām, Rā. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur’ān [i.e., recitation].

الۗرٰ یہ (اللہ کی) کتاب اور قرآن مبین کی آیات ہیں

Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims.

ایک وقت خواہش کریں گے وہ لوگ جنہوں نے کفر کیا تھا کہ کاش وہ مسلمان ہوتے

Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know.

(اے نبی !) چھوڑ دیجیے ان کو یہ کھا پی لیں اور فائدہ اٹھالیں اور (لمبی لمبی) امیدیں ان کو غافل کیے رکھیں تو عنقریب انہیں معلوم ہوجائے گا

And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree.

اور ہم نے کسی بھی بستی کو ہلاک نہیں کیا مگر اس کے لیے ایک معین نوشتہ تھا

No nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter.

کوئی امت نہ تو اپنے وقت معین سے آگے بڑھ سکتی ہے اور نہ پیچھے رہ سکتی ہے

And they say, "O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad.

اور انہوں نے کہا کہ اے وہ شخص جس پر (اس کے بقول) یہ ذکر نازل ہوا ہے (ہمارے نزدیک) تم تو یقیناً دیوانے ہو

Why do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful?"

کیوں نہیں لے آتے ہمارے سامنے فرشتوں کو اگر تم سچے ہو

We do not send down the angels except with truth; and they [i.e., the disbelievers] would not then be reprieved.

ہم نہیں اتارا کرتے فرشتوں کو مگر حق کے ساتھ اور (اگر فرشتے نازل ہوگئے تو) پھر انہیں مہلت نہیں دی جائے گی

Indeed, it is We who sent down the message [i.e., the Qur’ān], and indeed, We will be its guardian.

یقیناً ہم نے ہی یہ ذکر نازل کیا ہے اور بلاشبہ ہم ہی اس کے محافظ ہیں

And We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muḥammad], among the sects of the former peoples.

اور (اے نبی !) ہم نے آپ سے پہلے بھی رسول بھیجے تھے پہلی جماعتوں میں

And no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him.

اور نہیں آیا ان کے پاس کوئی بھی رسول مگر وہ اس کے ساتھ استہزا ہی کرتے رہے

Thus do We insert it [i.e., denial] into the hearts of the criminals.

اسی طرح ہم اس کو چبھو دیتے تھے مجرموں کے دلوں میں

They will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples.

(تو اے نبی !) یہ لوگ ایمان نہیں لائیں گے اور پہلے لوگوں کی سنت گزر چکی ہے

And [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend,

اور اگر ہم ان پر آسمان کا کوئی دروازہ کھول بھی دیتے اور وہ اس پر چڑھنے لگتے

They would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic."

تب بھی وہ یہی کہتے کہ ہماری تو نظربندی کردی گئی ہے بلکہ ہم پر تو جادو کردیا گیا ہے

And We have placed within the heaven great stars and have beautified it for the observers.

اور ہم نے آسمان میں برج بنائے ہیں اور ہم نے اسے (آسمانوں کو اور برجوں کو) مزین کردیا ہے دیکھنے والوں کے لیے

And We have protected it from every devil expelled [from the mercy of Allāh]

اور ہم نے حفاظت کی ہے اس کی ہر شیطان مردود سے

Except one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear burning flame.

ماسوائے اس کے کہ جو کوئی چوری چھپے سننا چاہے تو اس کا پیچھا کرتا ہے ایک انگارہ چمکتا ہوا

And the earth - We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing.

اور زمین کو ہم نے پھیلا دیا اور اس میں ہم نے لنگر ڈال دیے اور اس میں اگا دی ہم نے ہر شے ٹھیک اندازے کے مطابق

And We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you are not providers.

اور ہم نے بنائے ہیں تمہارے لیے اس میں ذرائع معاش اور (ان کے لیے بھی) جنہیں تم رزق نہیں دیتے

And there is not a thing but that with Us are its depositories, and We do not send it down except according to a known [i.e., specified] measure.

اور نہیں ہے کوئی شے مگر ہمارے پاس ہیں اس کے خزانے ہم نہیں نازل کرتے اس میں سے مگر ایک طے شدہ اندازے کے مطابق

And We have sent the fertilizing winds and sent down water from the sky and given you drink from it. And you are not its retainers.

اور ہم بھیجتے ہیں ہوائیں جو بوجھل ہوتی ہیں (یا بوجھل کرنے والی ہوتی ہیں) پس ہم نے اتارا آسمان سے پانی پھر وہ تم لوگوں کو پلایا اور تم اس کے جمع کرنے والے نہیں ہو

And indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritor.

اور یقیناً ہم ہی ہیں جو زندہ بھی رکھتے ہیں اور موت بھی وارد کرتے ہیں اور ہم ہی وارث ہوں گے

And We have already known the preceding [generations] among you, and We have already known the later [ones to come].

اور ہم جانتے ہیں تم میں سے آگے بڑھنے والوں کو بھی اور جانتے ہیں پیچھے رہنے والوں کو بھی

And indeed, your Lord will gather them; indeed, He is Wise and Knowing.

اور یقیناً آپ کا رب ہی ہے جو ان سب کو جمع کرے گا۔ یقیناً وہ کمال حکمت والا خوب علم رکھنے والا ہے

And We did certainly create man out of clay from an altered black mud.

اور یقیناً ہم نے بنایا ہے انسان کو سنے ہوئے گارے کی کھنکھناتی ہوئی مٹی سے

And the jinn We created before from scorching fire.

اور جنات کو ہم نے پیدا کیا تھا اس سے پہلے آگ کی لپٹ سے

And [mention, O Muḥammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "I will create a human being out of clay from an altered black mud.

اور یاد کرو جب کہا تھا آپ کے رب نے فرشتوں سے کہ میں بنانے والا ہوں ایک بشر کو سنے ہوئے گارے کی کھنکھناتی مٹی سے

And when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration."

پھر جب میں اسے پوری طرح درست کر دوں اور پھونک دوں میں اس میں اپنی روح میں سے تو گرپڑنا اس کے لیے سجدے میں

So the angels prostrated - all of them entirely,

تو سجدہ کیا تمام فرشتوں نے مل کر

Except Iblees; he refused to be with those who prostrated.

سوائے ابلیس کے اس نے انکار کیا سجدہ کرنے والوں کے ساتھ ہونے سے

[Allāh] said, "O Iblees, what is [the matter] with you that you are not with those who prostrate?"

اللہ نے فرمایا : اے ابلیس کیا ہوا تجھے کہ تو نہیں ہوا سجدہ کرنے والوں کے ساتھ

He said, "Never would I prostrate to a human whom You created out of clay from an altered black mud."

اس نے کہا : میرے لیے روا نہیں ہے کہ سجدہ کروں اس بشر کو جسے تو نے پیدا کیا ہے سنے ہوئے گارے کی کھنکھناتی مٹی سے

[Allāh] said, "Then depart from it, for indeed, you are expelled.

اللہ نے فرمایا : بس نکل جاؤ اس میں سے تم یقیناً مردود ہوچکے ہو

And indeed, upon you is the curse until the Day of Recompense."

اور یقیناً تم پر لعنت رہے گی روز جزا تک

He said, "My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected."

اس نے عرض کی کہ اے میرے پروردگار ! مجھے مہلت دے دے اس دن تک جب یہ دوبارہ اٹھائے جائیں گے

[Allāh] said, "So indeed, you are of those reprieved

اللہ نے فرمایا (جاؤ) تمہیں مہلت دے دی گئی

Until the Day of the time well-known."

وقت معین کے دن تک

[Iblees] said, "My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make [disobedience] attractive to them [i.e., mankind] on earth, and I will mislead them all

اس نے کہا : اے میرے پروردگار ! چونکہ تو نے مجھے گمراہ کیا ہے میں یقیناً مزین کر دوں گا ان کے لیے زمین میں (دنیا کو) اور میں ضرور گمراہ کر دوں گا ان سب کو

Except, among them, Your chosen servants."

سوائے تیرے ان بندوں کے جن کو تو ان میں سے (اپنے لیے) خالص کرلے

[Allāh] said, "This is a path [of return] to Me [that is] straight.

اللہ نے فرمایا کہ یہ ایک سیدھا راستہ ہے جو مجھ تک پہنچانے والا ہے

Indeed, My servants - no authority will you have over them, except those who follow you of the deviators.

یقینا میرے بندوں پر تجھے کچھ اختیار نہیں ہوگا سوائے ان کے جو خود تیری پیروی کریں گمراہوں میں سے

And indeed, Hell is the promised place for them all.

اور یقیناً جہنم ہی ان سب کا موعود ٹھکانہ ہے

It has seven gates; for every gate is of them [i.e., Satan's followers] a portion designated."

اس (جہنم) کے سات دروازے ہیں ان میں سے ہر دروازے کا ایک حصہ ہے مقرر شدہ

Indeed, the righteous will be within gardens and springs,

(اس کے برعکس) یقیناً متقی لوگ ہوں گے باغات اور چشموں میں

[Having been told], "Enter it in peace, safe [and secure]."

(ان سے کہا جائے گا کہ) تم داخل ہوجاؤ ان (باغات) میں سلامتی کے ساتھ بےخوف و خطر

And We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment, [so they will be] brothers, on thrones facing each other.

اور ہم نکال دیں گے ان کے سینوں میں سے جو کچھ بھی کدورت ہوگی بھائی بھائی (بن کر وہ بیٹھے ہوں گے) تختوں پر آمنے سامنے

No fatigue will touch them therein, nor from it will they [ever] be removed.

نہیں پہنچے گی انہیں اس میں کوئی تھکان اور نہ ہی وہ اس میں سے نکالے جائیں گے

[O Muḥammad], inform My servants that it is I who am the Forgiving, the Merciful,

(اے نبی !) میرے بندوں کو بتا دیجئے کہ میں یقیناً بہت بخشنے والا نہایت رحم کرنے والا ہوں

And that it is My punishment which is the painful punishment.

اور یہ کہ میرا عذاب بھی بہت دردناک عذاب ہے

And inform them about the guests of Abraham,

اور انہیں ذرا بتایئے ابراہیم کے مہمانوں کے بارے میں

When they entered upon him and said, "Peace." [Abraham] said, "Indeed, we are fearful [i.e., apprehensive] of you."

جب وہ داخل ہوئے آپ کے ہاں تو انہوں نے سلام کیا آپ نے کہا کہ ہمیں تو تم سے خوف آ رہا ہے

[The angels] said, "Fear not. Indeed, we give you good tidings of a learned boy."

انہوں نے کہا کہ ڈرئیے نہیں ہم آپ کو ایک صاحب علم بیٹے کی بشارت دیتے ہیں

He said, "Have you given me good tidings although old age has come upon me? Then of what [wonder] do you inform?"

آپ نے کہا کہ کیا تم مجھے خوشخبری دے رہے ہو باوجود اس کے کہ مجھ پر بڑھاپا طاری ہوچکا ہے تو تم مجھے یہ کیسی خوشخبری دے رہے ہو

They said, "We have given you good tidings in truth, so do not be of the despairing."

انہوں نے کہا کہ ہم آپ کو حق کے ساتھ بشارت دے رہے ہیں تو آپ ناامید لوگوں میں سے نہ ہوں

He said, "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except for those astray?"

آپ نے کہا کہ کون ہوگا جو اپنے رب کی رحمت سے مایوس ہو سوائے گمراہوں کے

[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"

آپ نے پوچھا : اے فرستادو ! تمہاری کیا مہم ہے

They said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals,

انہوں نے کہا کہ ہمیں بھیجا گیا ہے ایک مجرم قوم کی طرف

Except the family of Lot; indeed, we will save them all

سوائے آل لوط کے ان سب کو ہم ضروربچا لیں گے

Except his wife." We [i.e., Allāh] decreed that she is of those who remain behind.

سوائے ان کی بیوی کے ہم نے اندازہ ٹھہرا لیا ہے کہ وہ یقیناً پیچھے رہنے والوں میں سے ہوگی

And when the messengers came to the family of Lot,

تو جب لوط کے گھر پہنچے وہ بھیجے ہوئے

He said, "Indeed, you are people unknown."

اس (لو ط) نے کہا کہ یقیناً تم اجنبی لوگ ہو

They said, "But we have come to you with that about which they were disputing,

انہوں نے کہا : بلکہ ہم تو آپ کے پاس وہ شے لے کر آئے ہیں جس کے بارے میں یہ لوگ شک میں پڑے ہوئے تھے

And we have come to you with truth, and indeed, we are truthful.

اور ہم آئے ہیں آپ کے پاس حق (قطعی فیصلے) کے ساتھ اور یقیناً ہم سچے ہیں

So set out with your family during a portion of the night and follow behind them and let not anyone among you look back and continue on to where you are commanded."

تو آپ اپنے گھر والوں کو لے جائیے رات کے ایک حصے میں اور آپ ان کے پیچھے پیچھے جائیے اور آپ لوگوں میں سے کوئی بھی پیچھے مڑ کر نہ دیکھے اور آپ چلے جائیے جہاں آپ کو حکم ہوا ہے

And We conveyed to him [the decree] of that matter: that those [sinners] would be eliminated by early morning.

اور ہم نے لوط کو اپنے اس فیصلے سے آگاہ کردیا کہ صبح ہوتے ہی ان لوگوں کی جڑ کاٹ دی جائے گی

And the people of the city came rejoicing.

اور آئے اہل شہر خوشیاں مناتے ہوئے

[Lot] said, "Indeed, these are my guests, so do not shame me.

لوط نے کہا : یہ میرے مہمان ہیں چناچہ تم لوگ مجھے رسوا نہ کرو

And fear Allāh and do not disgrace me."

اللہ سے ڈرو اور مجھے بےآبرو مت کرو

They said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] people?"

انہوں نے کہا : کیا ہم نے آپ کو سب دنیا والوں (کی حمایت میں کھڑے ہونے) سے منع نہیں کیا تھا

[Lot] said, "These are my daughters - if you would be doers [of lawful marriage]."

آپ نے کہا : یہ میری بیٹیاں ہیں اگر تمہیں کچھ کرنا ہی ہے

By your life, [O Muḥammad], indeed they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly.

قسم ہے آپ کی جان کی وہ لوگ اپنی اس بدمستی میں بالکل اندھے ہوگئے تھے

So the shriek seized them at sunrise.

تو انہیں آپکڑا ایک چنگھاڑنے اجالا ہونے کے وقت

And We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay.

پھر ہم نے اس کے اوپر والے حصے کو بنا دیا اس کے نچلے والا اور ہم نے برسائے ان کے اوپر پکی ہوئی مٹی کے کنکر

Indeed in that are signs for those who discern.

یقیناً اس میں نشانیاں ہیں ان لوگوں کے لیے جو حق کے متلاشی ہوتے ہیں

And indeed, they [i.e., those cities] are [situated] on an established road.

اور یہ بستیاں ایک سیدھی راہ پر واقع تھیں

Indeed in that is a sign for the believers.

یقیناً اس میں نشانی ہے اہل ایمان کے لیے

And the companions of the thicket [i.e., the people of Madyan] were [also] wrongdoers,

اور بیشک بن والے بھی ظالم تھے

So We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway.

تو ان سے بھی ہم نے انتقام لیا۔ اور یہ دونوں بستیاں بھی کھلے راستے پر واقع تھیں

And certainly did the companions of al-Ḥijr [i.e., the Thamūd] deny the messengers.

اور (اسی طرح) حجر والوں نے بھی مرسلین کو جھٹلایا

And We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away.

اور انہیں ہم نے اپنی آیات عطا کیں لیکن وہ ان سے اعراض ہی کرتے رہے

And they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure.

اور وہ پہاڑوں کو تراش کر گھر بناتے تھے امن و سکون کے ساتھ

But the shriek seized them at early morning,

تو انہیں آپکڑا ایک چنگھاڑ نے صبح کے وقت

So nothing availed them [from] what they used to earn.

تو کچھ کام نہ آسکا ان کے جو وہ کماتے تھے

And We have not created the heavens and earth and that between them except in truth. And indeed, the Hour is coming; so forgive with gracious forgiveness.

اور ہم نے نہیں تخلیق کیا آسمانوں اور زمین کو اور جو کچھ ان دونوں کے درمیان ہے مگر حق کے ساتھ اور یقیناً قیامت آکر رہے گی تو (اے نبی !) آپ ان سے خوبصورتی کے ساتھ در گزر کریں

Indeed, your Lord - He is the Knowing Creator.

یقیناً آپ کا رب پیدا کرنے والا خوب جاننے والا ہے

And We have certainly given you, [O Muḥammad], seven of the often repeated [verses]1 and the great Qur’ān.

اور ہم نے آپ کو دی ہیں سات بار بار پڑھی جانے والی آیات اور عظمت والا قرآن

Do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [certain] categories of them [i.e., the disbelievers], and do not grieve over them. And lower your wing [i.e., show kindness] to the believers.

آپ آنکھ اٹھا کر بھی نہ دیکھیں اس مال و متاع کی طرف جو ہم نے ان کے مختلف گروہوں کو دے رکھا ہے اور آپ ان کی حالت پر غم نہ کریں اور اہل ایمان کے لیے اپنے بازو جھکا کر رکھیں

And say, "Indeed, I am the clear warner" -

اور کہہ دیجیے کہ میں تو کھلم کھلا خبردار کرنے والا ہوں

Just as We had revealed [scriptures] to the separators

جیسے کہ ہم نے نازل کیا ان تقسیم کرنے والوں پر

Who have made the Qur’ān into portions.

جنہوں نے (اپنے) قرآن کو ٹکڑے ٹکڑے کردیا

So by your Lord, We will surely question them all

تو (اے محمد !) آپ کے رب کی قسم ! ہم ان سب سے پوچھ کر رہیں گے

About what they used to do.

جو کچھ یہ لوگ کرتے رہے ہیں

Then declare what you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists.

اب آپ علی الاعلان بیان کریں جس کا آپ کو حکم دیا جا رہا ہے اور ان مشرکوں کی ذرا پروا نہ کریں

Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers

ہم آپ کی طرف سے کافی ہیں ان استہزا کرنے والوں (سے نمٹنے) کے لیے

Who make [equal] with Allāh another deity. But they are going to know.

جو اللہ کے ساتھ دوسرے معبود گھڑے بیٹھے ہیں۔ تو عنقریب انہیں معلوم ہوجائے گا

And We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say.

اور ہم جانتے ہیں کہ آپ کا سینہ تنگ ہوتا ہے ان کی باتوں سے

So exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord and be of those who prostrate [to Him].

پس آپ تسبیح کیجیے اپنے رب کی حمد کے ساتھ اور سجدہ کرنے والوں میں سے ہوجائیے

And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty [i.e., death].

اور اپنے رب کی بندگی میں لگے رہیں یہاں تک کہ یقینی شے وقوع پذیر ہوجائے
